The Metacomet Greenway Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that originated as a group of citizen volunteers working to utilize the abandoned Old Colony Railroad corridor in Walpole, Norfolk, Wrentham, Plainville and North Attleboro as recreation and open space.
This 17 mile way offers the potential for a diverse range of recreational trail uses. Across America, communities have developed rail trails to promote: safe, alternative transportation; recreation activities; energy conservation; clean air; enhance a community's quality-of-life, residents’ health and so much more.
Recreational trails are known to provide multiple benefits, including significant safety benefits, to the towns along the corridor. The Greenway provides safe routes to schools, recreational parks, shopping, increased tourism, economic benefits, historical preservation, and a boost to health and well-being.
Seeing a need for expanded outdoor recreational resources in the area, we formed our organization in June 2020 to set a goal of developing the former corridor into a multi-use trail for the community to enjoy. We've consistently grown since we began this initiative all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community! As of May 23rd

We've consistently grown since we began this initiative all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community! As of May 23rd, 2021 Metacomet Greenway Association Inc has been formally organized, all in under one year! We couldn't have done this without the countless hours put in by our group of volunteers! We hope to become a recognized 501(c)3 organization in the very near future and will begin searching for members to help this great project!

The Metacomet Greenway’s mission is to explore the best options for making these benefits available to our Towns’ residents of all ages. The group’s role may include pursuing grants and other funding to reduce expenses for the benefitting communities, increasing public support for the project through community and trail neighbor outreach, and eventually designing, building, and maintaining the recreational trail

While we aim to be true to the former rail corridor, it will take detailed feasibility studies to determine the actual route of the trail.
We are in the very early stages of this LONG term project. There will be many factors, most of which are unknown at this time that will impact the actual route. Please see the downloadable version of our map down below!
We aim to work with all trail neighbors to provide them the privacy they deserve, and the community access to a greenway space we can all be proud of.
The easiest way to help is to spread the word to friends, neighbors and family members to support our efforts (like our social media pages! ). This is a community project and we'll need the support of our community to accomplish any of our goals!
Most shared-use paths (multi-purpose trails) are facilities for non-motorized users that are independently aligned and not necessarily associated with parallel roadways. Shared use paths are designed to accommodate a variety of users, including walkers, bicyclists, joggers, people with disabilities, skaters, pets and sometimes equestrians. These users can be on the facility for a variety of purposes including recreation, commuting, and local travel.
Background: to this date, the town has approved $50,000 from the Community Preservation Fund (May, 2021) to complete a comprehensive feasibility study for the proposed Metacomet Greenway. The feasibility study was presented to the town in a community public workshop on May 26, 2022. Since that time, conversations have advanced with bordering towns Walpole and Wrentham to ensure connection points and access to the proposed trail in adjacent towns.
Last month, the town, and the Metacomet Greenway Association were approached regarding a pilot grant program from the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. This is a rare opportunity to secure funding for a large portion of the proposed project.
What exactly is the grant program?
A $4 million program with applications launching in November 2023 to fund design costs for new projects all the way to design completion, with the intent that once a project gets funded for design and hits 25% it would then "roll over" for potential construction.
What's included in the design?
The portion being discussed would provide design and future construction from the S.M. Lorusso Fields in Walpole, through Norfolk, and connect to the Rice Complex in Wrentham.
What happens to the money if the project isn't selected?
The town would use the funds to pay for the design firm to file the project with MassDOT. All other funds would not be touched.
Where does the money come from? Will my taxes increase?
The funds being requested would again come from the Community Preservation Fund, which has been and continues to raise money through the imposition of a surcharge of tax against real property. Unlike the new Fire station, or proposed school projects, the article would not impact or increase your taxes. In fact, the idea of the CPA is to support projects exactly like this one!
